| Jinete de ballenas |
La leyenda cuenta como, hace muchos años atrás, un semidiós de nombre Paikea llegó a tierras vírgenes de Nueva Zelanda montado sobre el lomo de una ballena. Desde entonces, las ballenas han sido para esta cultura, la forma adoptada por parte de sus ancestros y sus dioses, que vienen a cuidar de ellos. Desde entonces cada primogénito nace con la responsabilidad de ser el líder espiritual de su pueblo.
Sobre este relato tradicional de la cultura Maori se basa el segundo largometraje de la directora y guionista Niki Caro, en el que narra la historia de la pequeña Pai, primogénita del semidiós Paikea y nombrada así en su honor. Con tan solo doce años de edad, Pai debe asumir su responsabilidad como líder de su pueblo, el problema es que Pai es una niña y, para esta cultura, los líderes deben ser siempre pertenecientes al sexo masculino.
Pero a nadie parece importarle este factor, de hecho, la tradición cultural de Paikea parece no ser ya relevante para el pueblo de Pai, exceptuando para su abuelo Koro, actual líder que se encuentra desesperado por hallar un precusor, más no acepta que una mujer sea su predecesora, sin importarle lo mucho que quiere a su nieta, quien ante todo, lo que más desea en el mundo, es impresionar a su abuelo, lograr que él la acepte.
En una escena con su padre Pai pregunta por qué su abuelo no la quiere Su padre le contesta, que no es así, que lo que sucede es que su abuelo no solo está buscando un líder, que lo que quiere es un profeta, pero Pai ni si quiera entiende que es ser un profeta. Pero Koro no es un enemigo, es simplemente un ser que, como el mismo dice, “Apenas está aprendiendo a volar”.
La narración de “El jinete de ballenas”, es sencilla pero muy acertada. Se centra en la historia tal cual es, sin ningún artilugio abrumador en su forma que muchas veces resulta innecesario y explota muchas características de la cultura Maori cargando el ambiente de magia, de pasión.
La música refuerza de sobremanera este aire de magia ancestral, aunque son muy pocos los tracks musicales que en ella se encuentran, a mi parecer, su uso es muy acertado, además de estar cargados de gran belleza, se explota aún más las tradiciones de un cultura poco conocida por muchos.
Pero la magia y la pasión perceptible en esta excelente producción, no solo se debe al trabajo de Niki Caro, sino también, y creo yo en especial, a la magistral actuación de la pequeña Pai, interpretada por una joven y bellísima niña Maori Keisha Castle-Hughes.
Por otro lado y a mi parecer, afortunadamente, pese a que la película manifiesta la indudable importancia de la función que ejerce la mujer en la estructura de una civilización, se encuentra muy lejos de convertirse en un drama feminista. Se puede ver manifestada cierta posición crítica ante el machismo, pero esto es medianamente logrado solo a través del personaje del abuelo, siendo él el único que ve un problema en el hecho de que Pai es una niña, los demás personajes la aceptan e incluso le colaboran en la consecución de sus deseos.
Whale Rider nos recuerda la importancia de una buena historia, nos recuerda que no es necesario llenar de grandes escena creadas con una gran parafernalia para llegarnos, para sorprendernos y sentirnos en contacto con lo que nos cuentan, así sea la historia de una tierra que se encuentra a medio mundo de distancia.
Fácilmente podría compararse con el efecto obtenido por parte de la película kosovita “Tierra de nadie”, (En realidad es una coproducción entre seis países), ganadora del Oscar a la Mejor Película Extranjera pese a competir con una producción de proporciones tan magnánimas como Amelie. Al igual que la película de Niki Caro, era sencilla en su argumento, pero grande en su destreza narrativa, en su impacto y por ello, indudablemente merecedora de dicho reconocimiento.
En un mundo en constante cambio, en el que resulta excesivamente fácil perderse deambulando de lado a lado, de cultura en cultura, Whale Rider, o El jinete de ballenas, nos recuerda que es necesario mantener firmes las tradiciones de nuestros pueblos, mas no por ello se debe huir del cambio, es simplemente una tarea de adaptarse sin perder lo esencial de la cultura a la que pertenecemos por nacimiento. |

me encantó esta película, las costumbres, las tradiciones de esta comunidad tana jenas a la nuestra. Y las actuaciones son muy buenas y todos son actores naturales. Que por cierto eso está como muy de moda no? trabajar con actores naturales que sean ellos mismos en su contexto.

Si está de moda, pero a decir verdad me gusta la idea, al fin y al cabo que mejor que ellos mismos para relatar sus historias, el problema que es que al director le toca un trabajo muy dificil, para sacrles, lo mejor que pueda, sus dotes de actores, que es algo que, creo yo, toda persona tiene.
